Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Being a single girl Scott was also raised by her maternal grandmother. Along with two job opportunities, Scott took classes in secondary teaching at Temple University. She hoped to become a teacher of English in a secondary school. This dream however, was short-lived when she quit school after three years of study and became an aide to teachers. She began her career with a performance artist who spoke words, performing her pieces during poetry readings. She then teamed up together with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. They were able to collaborate and co-writing You Got Me. In a Roots performance, she announced her artist status. Then, she began working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She gained more experiences on the stage, as she appeared in the Canada tour of the Broadway production Rent. She was also the first signing agent for Hidden Beach Recordings.
